One Madison physician confronts the abortion industry

Catholic Vote and Alliance Defense Fund have a great video interview with Dr. Nancy Fredricks, who stood up for life and for medical integrity in the face of the behemoth pro-abortion forces inside the University of Wisconsin’s medical entities. UW leaders had been engaging in clandestine maneuverings with Planned Parenthood and they were on the verge of strong-arming a late-second trimester abortion business into the heart of Nancy’s quiet workplace, the Madison Surgery Center.

The actions by UW and the Madison Surgery Center triggered a massive two-year outpouring of
pro-life activity by Pro-Life Wisconsinites, as pro-lifers gathered for rallies, observed 40 Days for Life in the freezing cold at the Madison Surgery Center, thousands signed pro-life petitions, switched insurance companies away from UW, supported television commercials and newspaper ads, and so much more.

UW's pro-abortion lobbying also lead to PLW uncovering, exposing and curtailing the ongoing abortion training of UW medical residents at Planned Parenthood in Madison.

Ohio Bishops: No Catholic fundraising for Komen for the Cure

From LifeSiteNews:

The Ohio bishops have asked all parishes and schools to cease support of the Susan G. Komen Foundation after Bishop Leonard P. Blair of Toledo made national headlines earlier this month for such a stance.

“The Ohio Bishops agreed to direct Catholic parishes and schools away from fundraising for Komen for the Cure and toward activities and organizations that are fully consistent with Catholic moral teaching,” reads a July 20 statement from the Ohio Catholic Conference.

The bishops cited the breast cancer advocacy foundation’s support for Planned Parenthood, and the fact that their policies do not exclude embryonic stem cell research, even though they do not believe that Komen is currently involved in such research.

The statement explains that the National Catholic Bioethics Center had assured the bishops that Komen currently does not fund Planned Parenthood or embryonic stem cell research.

But the bishops noted that Komen’s local affiliates have contributed to Planned Parenthood in the past. In fact, in 2010 a spokesman for Komen revealed that 122 Komen affiliates had contributed a total of $733,303 to Planned Parenthood the previous year.

“In addition, literature provided by Komen indicates that the national Komen for the Cure would not rule out supporting research that destroys human embryos in the battle against breast cancer,” the statement reads. “Local Komen dollars can reach the national level. In Cincinnati, for example 75 cents of each dollar are spent on local projects, while 25 cents go to the national level.”

The bishops “expressed a common desire to avoid even indirect support for research involving human embryos,” says the statement.

"Stamp out pregnancy": Obamacare may force coverage of all contraceptives, sterilization

From LifeSiteNews:

A good friend and pro-life OB-GYN physician once told me of a sign posted in the residency offices of a prominent teaching hospital in Washington. It simply read, “Stamp out Pregnancy.”

Today the government moved closer to that omen with the Institute of Medicine’s recommendation that women should be able to receive contraceptives and sterilization procedures free under their personal and employee health care plan: “The full range of Food and Drug Administration-approved contraceptive methods, sterilizations procedures, and patient education and counseling for all women with reproductive capacity.” (Recommendation 5.5) This recommendation was presented to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in a list of preventative health care services for women which should be covered without reimbursement in new health plans under the federal health reform law (ObamaCare). HHS is expected to announce its final ruling in August of this year.

China: Illegal children will be confiscated

From The Economist:

“BEFORE 1997 they usually punished us by tearing down our houses for breaching the one-child policy…After 2000 they began to confiscate our children.” Thus Yuan Chaoren, a villager from Longhui county in Hunan province, describing in Caixin magazine the behaviour of family-planning bureaucrats. According to Caixin, local officials would take “illegal children” and pack them off to orphanages where they were put up for adoption. Foreign adoptive parents paid $3,000-5,000 per child. The bureaucrats collected a kickback.

Stealing children is not an official part of Beijing’s one-child policy, but it is a consequence of rules that are a fundamental affront to the human rights of parents and would-be parents. The policy damages families and upsets the balance between generations. It is so hated that even within China it is now coming under political attack. For the first time a whole province, Guangdong, with a population of over 100m, is demanding exemptions.

But the policy has almost certainly reduced fertility below the level to which it would have fallen anyway. As a result, China has one of the world’s lowest “dependency ratios”, with roughly three economically active adults for each dependent child or old person. It has therefore enjoyed a larger “demographic dividend” (extra growth as a result of the high ratio of workers to dependents) than its neighbours. But the dividend is near to being cashed out. Between 2000 and 2010, the share of the population under 14—future providers for their parents—slumped from 23% to 17%. China now has too few young people, not too many. It has around eight people of working age for every person over 65. By 2050 it will have only 2.2. Japan, the oldest country in the world now, has 2.6. China is getting old before it has got rich.
