Gov. Doyle signs sex education bill

On February 24, Governor Doyle signed Assembly Bill (AB) 458 into law as 2009 Wisconsin Act 134. Act 134 effectively prohibits local public school districts from adopting "abstinence-only" or "abstinence-centered" human growth and development programs – a freedom and flexibility they enjoyed under previous law. Under the new law, if a school district chooses to adopt a human growth and development program it will be forced to include in its curriculum instruction on the "health benefits, side effects, and proper use of contraceptives and barrier methods." Click here for a copy of Act 134: http://www.legis.state.wi.us/2009/data/acts/09Act134.pdf

Governor Doyle’s signing of AB 458 is yet another sad example of his bowing to the demands of Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin. Planned Parenthood’s agenda in initiating and ramming through this legislation is to: 1) sexualize our children at an early age; 2) get them on contraception as soon as possible; 3) refer them to Planned Parenthood abortion mills when the contraception inevitably fails; and 4) profit from surgical abortions. Never the mind the deaths of innocent preborn children and the physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual damage to vulnerable young mothers and fathers – Planned Parenthood’s number one objective is to make money!

As parents and concerned citizens, we need to fight this assault on our youth. Chastity/abstinence is the only message that will protect their bodies and preserve their innocence. Pro-Life Wisconsin urges public school districts across Wisconsin to drop their human growth and development programs. If a school district retains or initiates a program, we urge parents to opt their children out of the program and either teach the subject matter themselves or find a private program that teaches chastity/abstinence. Our children’s lives depend on it, born and preborn.

On November 5, 2009, the Wisconsin State Assembly passed AB 458 by a vote of 48-43 (click here for the roll call vote). The Wisconsin State Senate passed AB 458 on January 28, 2010, by a vote of 18-15 (click here for the roll call vote). Pro-Life Wisconsin thanks all those who called, emailed or wrote their state legislators and the Governor in opposition to this harmful bill.

The Economist: Gendercide, the war on baby girls

From The Economist March 4 print edition [emphasis added]

Killed, aborted or neglected, at least 100m girls have disappeared — and the number is rising

IMAGINE you are one half of a young couple expecting your first child in a fast-growing, poor country. You are part of the new middle class; your income is rising; you want a small family. But traditional mores hold sway around you, most important in the preference for sons over daughters. Perhaps hard physical labor is still needed for the family to make its living. Perhaps only sons may inherit land. Perhaps a daughter is deemed to join another family on marriage and you want someone to care for you when you are old. Perhaps she needs a dowry.

Now imagine that you have had an ultrasound scan; it costs $12, but you can afford that. The scan says the unborn child is a girl. You yourself would prefer a boy; the rest of your family clamors for one. You would never dream of killing a baby daughter, as they do out in the villages. But an abortion seems different. What do you do?

For millions of couples, the answer is: abort the daughter, try for a son. In China and northern India more than 120 boys are being born for every 100 girls. Nature dictates that slightly more males are born than females to offset boys’ greater susceptibility to infant disease. But nothing on this scale.

On the passing of Linda Schmidt, president of Citizens for a Pro-Life Society of Wisconsin

Linda Schmidt – president of Citizens for a Pro-Life Society of Wisconsin, a very dear friend to Pro-Life Wisconsin, one of the Notre Dame 88, a mother, wife and grandmother – passed into eternal rest on March 2, 2010. Citizens for a Pro-Life Society co-hosted two events annually with Pro-Life Wisconsin – the Rally for Life in Milwaukee held around the Roe v. Wade anniversary and a Good Friday Prayer Vigil.

Despite proof of terminal cancer, prosecutors of the Notre Dame 88 refused to drop charges against her. Click here to read the story. To read Linda’s obituary, click here.
