Three pro-life bills passed by State Assembly; await Gov. Walker's signature to be made law

Last week, the Wisconsin State Assembly passed three pro-life bills. Each of these bills has already passed the State Senate and now await Gov. Walker's expected signature to become law.

The bills are as follows:
- Senate Bill 306: "Banning webcam abortions": A bill banning so-called webcam abortions passed the State Assembly on a 60 to 33 vote on Thursday. Senate Bill 306 was authored by Senator Mary Lazich (R-New Berlin) and co-authored by Representative Michelle Litjens (R-Oshkosh). Click here to see how your representative voted.

The legislation effectively prohibits webcam abortions by requiring the prescribing physician to perform a physical exam of the woman and to be physically present in the room when the abortion-inducing drug is given. The bill also requires the woman to return to the abortion facility for a follow-up visit 12 to 18 days after the use of an abortion-inducing drug to confirm the termination of the pregnancy and evaluate her medical condition.

In 2010, Pro-Life Wisconsin’s investigative research revealed that the system was already in place for so-called telemed abortions, a process whereby a woman consults with a doctor on a video camera, and at the end of the “appointment,” out pops abortion-causing drugs.

- Senate Bill 237: “Strong Communities…Healthy Kids Act”: Senate Bill 237, authored by Senator Mary Lazich (R-New Berlin) and co-authored by Representative JeremyThiesfeldt (R-Fond du Lac), passed on a 60 to 34 vote on Wednesday. It reverses the contraception education/instruction sexual education mandate of 2009, and gives public school districts the freedom to adopt abstinence-only human growth and development curricula. The legislation also prohibits school-based volunteer health providers from providing instruction in human growth and development thus preventing Planned Parenthood nurses and physicians from teaching about abortion and contraception in our public schools. Click here to see how your representative voted.

- Senate Bill 92: Obamacare abortion coverage opt-out: Senate Bill 92, authored by Senator Rich Zipperer (R-Pewaukee) and co-authored by Representative Robin Vos (R-Burlington), passed on a 61 to 34 vote. It prohibits any plan in Wisconsin’s prospective health insurance “exchange” from covering abortion. Obamacare allows health insurance plans offering abortion coverage to participate in a state's insurance exchange and to receive federal subsidies unless the state legislature proactively opts-out of offering such plans. Although the state exchanges do not go into effect until 2014, several states have already enacted laws opting-out of abortion coverage including Arizona, Tennessee, Mississippi, Missouri, Louisiana, and Nebraska. Pro-Life Wisconsin applauds the Wisconsin Legislature for passing common sense bills that protect children and pro-life taxpayers. We look forward to their enactment into law this spring.

Rallies for Religious Freedom to be held in Madison and Milwaukee

On Friday, March 23 at noon, Vigil for Life and Pro-Life Wisconsin will join more than 100 cities nationwide in protesting the recent Department of Health and Human Services decision mandating that all commercial insurance plans cover contraception -- including abortifacient birth control, and sterilizations.

We'll meet at noon on the sidewalk in Madison at the U.S. District Courthouse (120 N. Henry Street) and in Milwaukee at the Downtown Federal Building (310 West Wisconsin Ave.). The vigils last until 1 p.m. If you can't make it for the entire hour, come as long as you're available.

Some signs will be available, and prayer for our nation is encouraged!

Contact Steve at (608) 445-2063 or with questions on the Madison rally or call Peggy (262) 796-1111 ext.11 for information on the Milwaukee rally.

What is the HHS Mandate?

In January, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued a mandate requiring all health plans to include free contraceptives, sterilizations and abortion-inducing drugs, regardless of any moral or religious objections. The HHS Mandate is an unprecedented assault on religious freedom and must be opposed!

Milwaukee: On Good Friday, April 6, at 9am. Stations will be said at St. Rita's Parish, 1601 N. Cass St., Milwaukee, with procession to the Affiliated abortion mill.
