Abortionists and Pro-Life Docs Agree: Abortion Is Never Necessary to Save a Woman's Life

Many dedicated pro-life people are against exceptions for abortion in cases of rape and incest. Why should an innocent baby pay for his or her father's crime? All lives are created equal, they correctly argue.

Yet, too often, these same people make an exception for one exception: The life of the mother. If the mother's life is in danger, these people believe, they should allow the baby to be aborted. It is the only compassionate thing to do, they suggest. Accordingly, pro-life bill after pro-life bill contains an exception for the mother's life.

The problem is, abortion is never medically necessary to save the mother's life (and it wouldn't make abortion right even if it did). It just isn't. Over 900 pro-life doctors and medical researchers have signed the Dublin Declaration, a document stating that abortion is never medically necessary to save a mother's life. Even abortionists agree that abortion isn't necessary to save a woman's life. Former abortionist Dr. Bernard Nathanson, who himself performed over 30,000 abortions, said the following:
In our first book [after he stopped doing abortions], we proposed a lengthy list of illnesses (including but not limited to heart or kidney disease) which would justify abortion.  We regard that list now with…disbelief: if women with heart and liver transplants can be carried successfully through pregnancy, we can no longer conceive of any medical condition which would legitimize abortion.  In short, we have slowly evolved to an unshakable posture of no exceptions…[W]orkable, morally acceptable legislation proscribing abortion can have no exceptions written into it – not even medical ones.  (Bernadell Technical Bulletin, April 1991)
Abortion exceptions undermine everything we are fighting for. By embracing them as a pro-life movement, we are essentially saying, "We want to keep abortion safe, legal, and rare" rather than abolished forever. At Pro-Life Wisconsin, we believe every life matters, and that's why we stand for the dignity of every human life---no exceptions.

Montana House Passes Personhood Bill

On Friday, March 27, the Montana state House voted to pass a Personhood law that would define life as beginning at conception. House Bill 425 states that "No person shall be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law," and that "the word ‘person’ applies to all members of the species Homo sapiens at any stage of development, including the stage of fertilization or conception, regardless of age, health, level of functioning, or condition of dependency."

The bill passed 54-46. It now moves to the Montana Senate where it will need to receive 46 out of 50 votes to pass. If successful, a constitutional amendment would be presented as a referendum for voters in the November 2016 general election.
