U.S. Catholic Bishops correct Biden on contraception mandate debate comments

From the USCCB:

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) issued the following statement, October 12. Full text follows:

Last night, the following statement was made during the Vice Presidential debate regarding the decision of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to force virtually all employers to include sterilization and contraception, including drugs that may cause abortion, in the health insurance coverage they provide their employees:

"With regard to the assault on the Catholic Church, let me make it absolutely clear. No religious institution—Catholic or otherwise, including Catholic social services, Georgetown hospital, Mercy hospital, any hospital—none has to either refer contraception, none has to pay for contraception, none has to be a vehicle to get contraception in any insurance policy they provide. That is a fact. That is a fact."

This is not a fact. The HHS mandate contains a narrow, four-part exemption for certain "religious employers." That exemption was made final in February and does not extend to "Catholic social services, Georgetown hospital, Mercy hospital, any hospital," or any other religious charity that offers its services to all, regardless of the faith of those served.

Nearly 200 confirmed saved babies at 40 Days for Life halfway point

Halfway through this fall's 40 Days for Life campaign, an incredible 198 babies have been saved--and those are just the saves that have been confirmed. Wisconsin's campaigns have certainly helped add to that total. Milwaukee's campaign typically is among the nation's leaders for saved babies, and the Madison vigil reported a turnaround on Friday.

But while it's easier to count the number of saved babies at locations like Milwaukee and Madison, there's no doubt that the vigil is having an impact at each of Wisconsin's eight sites. For example, Green Bay's campaign recently
caught the attention of Fox 11 News. This demonstrates that prayer is just as effective at hospitals and birth control dispensaries, even if it's sometimes answered a little differently.

One of our favorite anecdotes from the sidewalks this fall came just this past weekend when the campaign leaders of the La Crosse and Stevens Point were traveling to visit friends and made a quick stop at the Madison vigil site. To their surprise, they found a bachelor party. The groom-to-be and his friends decided to make praying for an end to abortion part of their festivities!
