“Choose Life” Wisconsin license plate legislation to receive public hearing tomorrow

The Assembly Committee on Transportation will hold a public hearing tomorrow on Assembly 206, legislation authored by State Representative Andre Jacque (R-De Pere) establishing a “Choose Life” Wisconsin specialty license plate. The “Choose Life” plate will provide a wonderful opportunity for Wisconsinites to express their pro-life beliefs and facilitate and encourage adoption as a positive, life-affirming choice for women with unplanned pregnancies. For a Capital Times story on the bill, click here.

Beginning with Florida in 2000, twenty-nine states have established “Choose Life” license plates raising over $17 million for adoption assistance. Pro-Life Wisconsin would like to see Wisconsin be the 30th state (and the 8th Midwestern state following Iowa, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, North and South Dakota) to produce and sell a “Choose Life” license plate. Over 830,000 “Choose Life” plates have sold nationwide.

Choose Life Wisconsin, Inc. will disburse the proceeds from the sale of the plates to pregnancy care centers throughout the state. In addition to the regular vehicle registration fee, those who purchase the plate are required to pay a $15 fee for issuance or reissuance of the special plates and a $25 annual fee that provides funds to Choose Life Wisconsin, Inc., a non-profit 501 c(3) organization.  Initial funds will cover Department of Transportation costs of plate production, and thereafter all funds will be distributed to pregnancy care centers.

Pro-Life Wisconsin is very proud of the “Choose-Life” Wisconsin plate design sporting our state’s signature red, white, and black colors, an image of a baby’s ink footprint, and the positive “Choose Life” moniker.

The public hearing will be held tomorrow Tuesday, September 24, 2013, in the State Capitol, Room 417 North (GAR Hall), at 12:00 p.m.

Obama Administration appeals Hobby Lobby/HHS mandate case to the U.S. Supreme Court

(From LifeSiteNews.com, 9/20/13) The Obama Administration isn’t giving up the fight to force the Christian-owned Hobby Lobby chain of craft stores to abide by the controversial HHS contraception mandate. On Wednesday the administration asked the Supreme Court to overturn a federal appeals court ruling granting Hobby Lobby an exemption from the mandate, which requires employers to provide co-pay-free coverage for contraceptives, sterilization and abortion-causing drugs for all females of childbearing age enrolled in their company’s health plan. More than 60 company owners have sued the Obama Administration over the directive, arguing that forcing them to pay for procedures and drugs their faiths hold to be immoral violates their constitutionally-protected religious freedom…

The government’s attorneys argued that because Hobby Lobby is a for-profit corporation, it is not entitled to the same religious rights as an individual or a church.  It’s an argument that has met with success in two other similar cases this year in both the Third and Sixth Circuit Courts, decisions which the government cited heavily in its petition.

“The United States government is taking the remarkable position that private individuals lose their religious freedom when they make a living,” said Kyle Duncan, general counsel of the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty and lead lawyer for Hobby Lobby.   Added Duncan, “We’re confident that the Supreme Court will reject the government’s extreme position and hold that religious liberty is for everyone—including people who run a business.”
