Sample Correspondence

As committed pro-life voters, you are especially influential in legislators’ decision making. The following is a sample correspondence that you can use in calling your state representative:

Representative_____, I strongly encourage you to vote for AB 343, legislation that would prohibit UW System campuses from advertising, prescribing or dispensing the morning-after pill.

Not only can so-called emergency contraception kill a tiny preborn person, it can also harm women. Health side-effects include such life-threatening conditions as ectopic pregnancy and blood clot formation. Emergency contraception also offers no protection against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) including AIDS. It’s not the role of our state higher educational system to dispense a physically dangerous, abortion-causing drug to its students.

Again, please vote for AB 343. Thank you for your consideration.

Background

State Representative Dan LeMahieu (R-Oostburg) has introduced legislation – 2005 Assembly Bill (AB) 343 – that would prohibit the University of Wisconsin System (UWS) from advertising, prescribing or dispensing so-called emergency contraception. Pro-Life Wisconsin strongly supports this bill which has received over 40 legislative cosponsors!

AB 343 was prompted by a series of recent ads published in campus newspapers by the UW-Madison health services division encouraging students to prepare for spring break by accessing the morning-after pill. The ads advised students to call University Health Services to get their prescription over the phone without an appointment.

AB 343 was recommended for adoption by the Assembly Family Law Committee on a 5-1 bi-partisan vote on June 9th. For a copy of the bill and PLW’s “Quick Facts” guide to the bill, please click on the following weblinks:
