PLW Applauds Rep. Albers’ Effort to Fix Conscience Clause Bill

Peggy Hamill, state director of Pro-Life Wisconsin, issued the following statement yesterday on the floor debate over Assembly Bill (AB) 67:

"Pro-Life Wisconsin applauds Representative Sheryl Albers (R-Reedsburg) for offering an amendment during yesterday’s floor debate to restore all original protections to AB 67, specifically those protections surrounding participation in chemical abortion. The Albers amendment would have fixed this damaged bill, providing all health care professionals with much-needed employment protection. A true pro-life vote is a vote in favor of the Albers amendment. Without it, AB 67 remains fatally flawed."

As originally drafted, AB 67 offered workplace protections to a variety of health care professionals who do not wish to be involved in abortion and other life-ending procedures. However, an amendment offered in committee gutted AB 67 by specifically excluding protections for medical professionals, including pharmacists, who conscientiously refuse to provide abortion-causing birth control drugs or devices, including the “morning-after-pill.” The failed Albers amendment would have restored employment protections in this critical area.

Pro-Life Wisconsin commends the following legislators who voted in favor of Representative Albers’ amendment:

Representative Sheryl Albers (R-Reedsburg)
Representative Mark Gundrum (R-New Berlin)
Representative Glenn Grothman (R-West Bend)
Representative Steve Kestell (R-Elkhart Lake)
Representative Jeff Fitzgerald (R-Beaver Dam)
Representative Mark Gottlieb (R-Port Washington)
Representative Scott Suder (R-Abbotsford)
Representative Carol Owens (R-Oshkosh)
