Pro-Life Wisconsin Decries
California Birth Control Insurance Mandate

As Pro-Life Wisconsin works to suppress local efforts to mandate employee birth control insurance coverage, they decry the March 1 California Supreme Court ruling that California Catholic Charities must provide such coverage as part of its employee prescription drug benefit package.

“Why should the government force employers to cover drugs and devices that are purely elective, that endanger the lives of women and their children, and that violate the conscience rights of good people?,” asked Peggy Hamill, state director of Pro-Life Wisconsin. “What about the rights of those health insurers and health providers who have religious, moral and ethical objections to offering these drugs and devices, which are the antithesis of health care?”

“Many of these so-called contraceptives do not act simply to prevent conception,” stated Katherine Ribnek, communications director of Pro-Life Wisconsin. “Instead they can act, and often do, to cause early abortions by preventing implantation of a newly conceived human being. The so-called pro-choice movement wants millions of Americans who oppose abortion and know human life begins at the moment of fertilization to pay, through insurance premiums, for the elective actions of others.”

“Its sadly ironic that the same individuals who argue so vehemently against government intrusion into privates lives are leading the charge to usurp the 1st Amendment right of Christians to freely exercise the deeply held convictions of their faith,” continued Hamill. “Pro-Life Wisconsin will continue to proactively combat the harmful nature of birth control while keeping a vigilant watch on legislative and judicial attempts to undermine our most basic freedoms.”
