Pro-Life Wisconsin extends congratulations to Archbishop Burke on his appointment as Cardinal

Wisconsin native son and former La Crosse Bishop Raymond L. Burke is among 24 new cardinals announced by Pope Benedict XVI today. Archbishop Burke is currently Archbishop emeritus of the St. Louis archdiocese and is prefect of the Vatican's apostolic signature.

“This is such a blessing for the Church and the faithful,” said Peggy Hamill, state director of Pro-Life Wisconsin. “Pro-Life Wisconsin is honored to enjoy his express support of our life-saving mission.”

Archbishop Burke is a staunch defender on teachings of the Catholic Church regarding contraception, abortion and denying Communion to pro-abortion politicians who persist in their error.

Archbishop Burke recently stated, “When a person has publicly espoused and cooperated in gravely sinful acts, leading many into confusion and error about fundamental questions of respect for human life and the integrity of marriage and the family, his repentance of such actions must also be public. The person in question bears a heavy responsibility for the grave scandal which he has caused. The responsibility is especially heavy for political leaders.”

“The Church, Her faithful and society at large can only benefit from Archbishop Burke’s commitment to defending innocent human life,” concluded Hamill. “We pray for Archbishop Burke and wish him all the best.”
