Protect preborn children

                in the

Wisconsin Constitution!

These are exciting and hopeful times for the pro-life movement. Pro-lifers across the

nation have been inspired by bold initiatives at the state and federal level to defend

our preborn brothers and sisters. From South Dakota’s law banning abortion to the

federal Right to Life Act establishing legal personhood for unborn children,

Roe v. Wade is courageously being challenged from multiple directions. And why

not? After 30 years and 45 million dead, Americans are simply losing patience and

are no longer waiting for the ‘stars to align’ on the U.S. Supreme Court.Wisconsin,

too, must move forward – and we are.

Pro-Life Wisconsin (PLW) has begun an effort to persuade lawmakers to amend our

state constitution to protect the preborn. We have launched a statewide petition drive

calling upon Wisconsinites to support a preborn protection amendment to the

Wisconsin Constitution that would guarantee total legal protection for preborn

children. This summer, Pro-Life Wisconsin’s staff, our affiliate leaders and other

key volunteers are gathering thousands of signatures from all seventy-two counties

in the state. We are circulating petitions at church festivals, county fairs, and

door-to-door. Our goal is to present over 30,000 petition signatures to the Wisconsin

Legislature in January 2007. 


Since Pro-Life Wisconsin was founded in 1992, we have steadily worked toward our

ambitious goal of total legal protection for every preborn child in our state. With other

states like South Dakota, Michigan, Louisiana and Ohio initiating and passing measures

that would provide sweeping protections for the preborn, the time has come for the

pro-life movement in Wisconsin to do the same. Although Pro-Life Wisconsin’s petition

drive is only the first step in building public support for a constitutional amendment, it is

a crucial first step. PLW is encouraging all of our supporters to help gather signatures

at local churches, summer parades, and other venues where two or more pro-lifers are

gathered. The initial response has been strong and the number of petitions coming into

the state office is growing daily. But to be successful, we must mobilize as many

concerned pro-lifers as possible.

We know that Wisconsinites, born and preborn, deserve total and permanent

legal protection of their right to life - an inalienable right grounded in natural law.

Why, specifically, is a constitutional amendment so necessary?

    this provision to deny the right to life of the preborn by interpreting an

    independent right to abortion in our state constitution.  In so doing, the 

    court could nullify any present or future pro-life laws in our state.

    determines the majority party in Madison.  Legal protection of the preborn

    should not (and must not) be contingent upon which party controls the   

    state legislature.

 

The right to life should not be subject to the whims of a politicized supreme court or

an ever-changing legislature. Only by enshrining the right to life in our state constitution

will preborn children be afforded full and lasting legal protection.  

It’s time to be bold. For every week we delay in protecting the preborn, 185 more

children die in Wisconsin. It’s time to be principled. Making compromises, making

exceptions, and caving to political pressures guarantees failure. Now is the opportunity

to achieve the goal of 100% protection for every defenseless baby. Now is the time

to demand that the personhood of each preborn child be constitutionally
